Halloween trends through the decades

Above is a visual representation of the trends in Halloween costumes through the decades.

In the 1930s, the animated show Mickey Mouse’s Club house aired for the first time. In the following decade, Mini and Mickey Mouse slowly became the most popular costume.

With the rise of Wicca, a pagan religion, in the 1940s, witches were called into the pop culture spotlight for the first time since the Witch Trials in Salem.

The 1950s mark the date when the first Western show aired on television. After this show aired, many movies were filmed in a western setting, causing cowboy and cowgirl costumes to be one of the most popular of the decade.

In the 1960s, comic book companies were struggling to keep the superhero industry afloat. In order to put themselves back in the spotlight, writers began to write science fiction and war themes into their comics. Because of these new themes, people began to recognize the superheroes we have today as more than cheap memorabilia, making superiors the most popular costume of this decade.

In the 1970s, the WWF Superstars of wrestling began to adopt storylines for their wrestlers and extreme costumes, causing people everywhere to turn their heads to the wrestling industry. Star Wars was released in 1977, with the sequel coming out in 1980. As these two films rose to fame, so did their characters popular costume designs.

From 1993 to 1995, the television series Mighty Morphin Power Ranger’s aired episodes that quickly grew in popularity until children all over were dressing up as their favorite Power Ranger for halloween.

The 2000s decade marks the peak of superstar Michael Jackson’s singing and performing career, and consequently marks the most popular halloween costume of the decade.

In the year 2010,Toy Story 3 hit the big screen and raised over 1 billion dollars int he box office. Young kids became reunited with their favorite toys and in turn dressed up as Buzz Lightyear for Halloween. The final most popular costume, in this past year of 2019, was Pennywise the clown. The movie IT released in theaters last year for the first time since its original counterpart was aired in 1990.
