Most students love waking up in the morning to find out they canceled school due to snow; something that happened to USD250 kids several times this past winter.
Six school days have been canceled due to snow this school year which began to raise concern on whether or not snow days were going to run out. Snow days are built into the school calendar each year. This usually ends up being around six to seven, but can vary based on the calendar.
As of now, the district seems to be in the clear. If there is a need for another day to be taken off, however, time will need to be made up. This can happen by adding minutes onto the school day, adding a day at the end of the year, or going to school on a day that was already scheduled to be a “No School” day.
Many factors go into making the decision to take a snow day; anything from predicted precipitation, timing of the storm, or even events planned for the day in the district.
“The last thing we want to do is put somebody in harm’s way,” Tom Stegman, USD250’s Chief Operations Officer, said. “Making these decisions isn’t always easy.”
Winter has passed, so snow days might not be a concern now, but severe weather still poses a threat and can cause school to be canceled due to flooding, predicted severe weather, ect.
“The last thing you ever want to see is somebody get into an accident,” Stegman said. “It’s really a decision that you don’t take lightly.”
