On Feb. 1, junior wrestler DeMarus Partee hit 100 wins at the SEK invitational meet. He is on track to make history in the PHS wrestling program.
The most wins that has been reached in the wrestling program has been 147 by Tyler Koehn. Koehn also had the most pins of all time with 82. Head coach, LC Davis, predicts that Partee could break both of those records in his senior season.
“DeMarus puts in a lot of work in the dark,” Davis said. “The work that’s done in the dark, has come to light. He wakes up before school to train. His work ethic matches his talent.”
Partee has been wrestling for five years; since 7th grade. According to him, he instantly knew that it was going to be a fun sport for him and decided to pursue it further when he got to high school.
“Getting 100 wins is not a thing that many wrestlers achieve,” Partee said. “Being one of the few wrestlers who have achieved this is amazing and I would like to extend the wins so that I can make some history here at PHS.”
Partee is a multi-sport athlete with many more accomplishments than this. Other than placing second at regionals in wrestling, Partee also plays football and made the all-state team in the 2024 fall season.
“My mentality has not been my strong suit,” Partee said. “So I have been working on that so the season could go a lot better and smoother.”
While Partee struggled with the mental side of the sport, he had many mentors and teammates that helped him push through that and helped encourage him to reach this point.
“Coach Davis and Coach Latt have been there by my side,” Partee said. “They both encouraged me and lifted me to continue to work on my mental state. My practice partners over the years have also made me a better wrestler.”
Davis has been coaching at PHS for seven years. Davis has only coached two wrestlers who reached 100 wins their senior year, Reese Watson and Corbin Mcintier. However, Partee is the first to reach this point as a junior.
“I knew DeMarus was going to be special from the first time I wrestled him in 7th grade,” Davis said. “He has definitely proved that he is special, but he also puts in the work which is what has got him this far.”
