Despite expectations and pressure that can come from being a freshman on varsity, freshman Mckenzie English is leading the girls basketball team to one of the better seasons in recent history.
English knows that her spot on the court can vary and she’s willing to take on that role.
“I play 1-5 wherever my coach needs me,” English said. “I like playing inside but if I need to go out I will.”
Coach Dalton Gromer found out early about his young star. He thinks she’s brought in some key leadership characteristics to the team.
“I knew by tryouts that [English] was gonna be a big help to us,” Gromer said. “She’s shown leadership throughout the entire year and I can’t wait to see what she can do moving forward into the sub-state games.”
English likes to find joy in her sport as a way to combat the pressures of being a freshman on varsity.
“There are some pressures,” English said. “…but when I’m in the game, playing, all of them go away. At the end of the day it’s basketball and having fun is the most important thing.”
When it comes to goals throughout high school, English has lofty ones, but knows they’re obtainable.
“My main goal for the end of my 4 years at PHS is reaching the 1000 points mark,” English said. “I know I can do it, I just need to stay motivated and work at it.”
Senior Gabbie White is proud of how her teammate has developed and has high hopes moving forward.
“She’s a great player and I’m proud of how she’s gotten better throughout the year,” White said. “I know she’s gonna be a great player for this team for years to come.”
Gromer is excited to see how English improves throughout her highschool career, and has high expectations.
“I think she can be one of the best girls to come through the program,” Gromer said. “I can’t wait to watch the improvement and we’re all ready to go compete.”
