On September 24, 2024, Pittsburg High School hosted 27 other schools for the KSHSAA Regional Student Council (STUCO) Conference.
This event was put in place by PHS StuCo, and led by StuCo members and Co-President, senior Jay-Lynn Bingham.
“The preparation for the regional StuCo conference was a lot of playing and coordinating,” Bingham said. “We had many conferences with many people to make sure when the day came everything went smoothly.”
StuCo advisor Samantha Warren has been involved with the organization since 2014 and this was the first time that PHS had ever hosted this event.
“We were responsible for all the registrations, logistics, snacks, decorations, etc,” Warren said. “It was a really great opportunity for our students to experience running a giant event. We had to be creative and organized.”
The conference consisted of food, guest speakers, line dancing, and meetings for both advisors and students. One person who was involved in this process was StuCo member and freshman Lauryn Keller.
“The preparation was tough. We had to do lots of planning and brainstorming to make sure that it all flowed smoothly,” Keller said. “The music, intermission, maps, informational packet, and food all had to be perfect to make sure it was smooth sailing.”
Included in the conference were guest speakers. This year, Aric Jackson spoke on leadership and his life experiences for StuCo students.
“The regional StuCo conference was an amazing experience that I am glad I got to speak at and attend,” Bingham said. “There were so many schools and the speaker had a lot of good take-aways.”
According to Keller, the conference went great and although there were bound to be some minor mistakes they were able to improvised and overall was a huge success.
“I personally enjoyed seeing everyone get involved in some way during the conference whether it was doing a line dance or answering the open ended question the speaker was asking the audience,” Keller said. “Seeing everyone enjoy themselves and have fun was a moment of joy for me. I think that the conference went amazing.”
