Nintendo is the biggest video game company in Japan and has been a staple in the video game industry since the 80’s when the Nintendo Gameboy was released. Consumers and Nintendo have had a pretty good relationship for decades. This good relationship between consumers and Nintendo has recently started to get broken up by corporate greed from Nintendo.
This corporate greed is shown by Nintendo charging 80$ to 90$ for their games. This price for games is preposterous since industry standard for video game pricing is around 60$ to 70$. This change by Nintendo is mostly likely because of their new console coming out in June called the Nintendo Switch two.
The original Nintendo switch was released back in 2017 and priced its games at 60$ to 70$ a price it has kept to this day. This is not the only time a company or companies have charged more for their games; a prime example for this is in 2005. In 2005 new video game consoles were coming out and the games were 50$ to 60$.
The price for games before 2005 were 30$ to 40$. This price hike did have as much controversy probably since social media was not as big back then as it is today. Also 60$ in 2005 is worth 97.59$ today so that is how much inflation has impacted America in the past 20 years.
Inflation could be justified for the increase in game prices but when inflation was at a high peak in 2022 or 2023 game prices did not see a dramatic change. It is more likely that Nintendo raised the prices to get more profit from the games and to capitalize on the hype the Switch two will generate.
The president of Nintendo Doug Bowser was interviewed by CNBC on the price of games for the Nintendo switch two and basically he said that the experience of the games is premium on the new console that it justifies the price increase. This entire interview and statement was not very well received by consumers.
There are many games that are very fun to play and are priced at like 20$ or lower. Some of the top video games in the world are free to play or are less than 20$. This means that it is very favorable that Nintendo is doing this for profit over having a good relationship with consumers.
In conclusion Nintendo has jeopardized some of their good faith with consumers after going forward with this preposterous pricing strategy for their games going forward. These rising game prices are a bad sign for young adult gamers. Many of these young adults are already struggling to make ends meet.
This means that young adults won’t have as much money to spend on a fun activity like playing video games. The 80$ to 90$ game prices set by Nintendo will probably become the industry standard over the next few years since there is virtually nothing consumers can do about it.
